Hand Painted Thangka - Mahakala

The silk brocade fabric is sewn into the thangka, making it an elaborate art piece. Silk brocading is a process of framing a Thangka in traditional Tibetan style. It is believed that silk brocade renders a thangka more enchanting and more religious. The Thangka comes with the cover drape for protecting the Thangka. The technique of silk brocading was first developed around the 9th century AD as a way to protect paintings during transport across the treacherous Himalayan mountains.

Mahakala is fierce and powerful who defends the Dharma from corruption and degeneration and from forces hostile to it. Mahakala is a manifestation of the awakened mind. He is adorned with a crown of five skulls. The skull represents the transmutation of the five negative afflictions of human nature into positive virtues. His face possesses a typical wrathful expression, an intense anger. The mouth is contorted to an angry smile from its corners protrude long fangs. The protruding, bloodshot eyes have an angry and staring expression and a third eye is visible in the middle of the forehead.
